Timothy Snyder took a lot of grief from sophisticated academics for his book On Tyranny and for his worry about the incipient American version of fascism. I am pretty sure that he takes no pleasure in the fact that he was right. This extraordinary piece by him in the New York Times is well worth reading.

Longer essays, some long substantive posts that are not feature essays, and brief posts recommending writings elsewhere or commenting on each other with a view to conversation. When I write something elsewhere, I will usually include a shorter comment and link on this site. And there will be more longer ones from me here, usually about one per month.
